Descripción: The laboratory's centerpiece is a Human Patient
Simulator (HPS) developed by Medical Education Technologies, Inc.
The simulator is life-sized and fully interactive. Cardiovascular
features of the HPS include palpable radial and carotid artery
pulsations, heart sounds (normal and abnormal), 5-lead
electrocardiogram, noninvasive blood pressure measurements, direct
arterial blood pressure, central venous pressure, pulmonary artery
pressure, pulmonary artery occlusion (wedge) pressure, and
thermodilution cardiac output. All measurements are made using
standard monitoring instruments. |

The Mount Sinai Medical Center has both the distinctions of being
the first Beta test site and the only medical center in the
metropolitan tri-state area to possess a human patient simulator.
The Human Patient Simulator is a full-scale patient mannequin with
palpable pulses, breath, and heart sounds that physiologically
responds to more than 50 drugs through the interaction of
sophisticated cardiovascular and pulmonary computer driven models. |

The VA Simulation Center has
pioneered the use of mannequin-based, fully interactive simulators
in anesthesiology, intensive care, emergency medicine and other
clinical settings. Under the direction of David M. Gaba, M.D,
professor of anesthesia, the group has led simulations for research
and training since 1986, running a dedicated simulation center since
1995. Its current facility, which occupies 2400 square feet,
contains a replica operating room, a replica ED/ICU/ward, four
patient simulators and complete audiovisual recording, annotating,
and playback capabilities. |
